Polygraph
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office maintains a dedicated Polygraph Section within the Criminal Investigations Division to support both criminal investigations and agency personnel processes. Staffed by a certified polygraph examiner, this specialized function enhances the agency’s ability to detect deception, validate statements, and uphold investigative integrity.
The polygraph examiner conducts examinations in two primary areas:
- Criminal Investigations: Used as an investigative tool, polygraph testing assists detectives in verifying witness and suspect statements, identifying potential leads, and eliminating or confirming individuals of interest. While not admissible in court, polygraph results often contribute to the overall direction and resolution of complex cases, including homicides, sexual assaults, and other serious felonies.
- Pre-Employment Screening: As part of the Sheriff’s Office hiring process, polygraph examinations are administered to applicants for law enforcement and other sensitive positions. These examinations help ensure that candidates meet the agency’s high standards for integrity, reliability, and truthfulness.
The examiner is trained in nationally recognized protocols and maintains certification in accordance with professional standards set forth by the American Polygraph Association (APA). The Polygraph Section operates with a strict adherence to legal and ethical guidelines, ensuring that each examination is conducted with fairness, accuracy, and respect for individual rights.
By integrating this tool into both investigative and administrative processes, the Polygraph Section enhances the credibility of agency operations and supports the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.
